4 Tips & Tricks for Closet Spring Cleaning

1. Boot Shapers

Let's face it. It's time to break out spring dresses and stash those thigh-high boots away for the warmer months ahead. I have just the Amazon find for making your boot collection look a little bit more organized. The boot shapers are a form insert that bend to the curve of the boot. Each one has three height sizes so that they are compatible with pretty much any type of boot. Not only do these make your closet look a lot more organized, but they help keep your boots from cracking and sagging. They keep your boots protected while they are on display (or in storage) until breaking them out next season. Storage is half the battle to make shoes last more than a season. Check out the below pics for a before & after. Clicking on the "Boot Shapers" above will bring you to the same product page I ordered mine from.

2. "1 Year" Rule

The "1 Year" Rules means you should ask yourself if you wore the item within the last 365 days. I always think about it by season. If I didn't wear this jacket last winter or this winter, it's time to go. For pieces that I struggled with, I would ask my roommate or family/friend if they remember seeing me wear the item. If someone you see that often doesn't remember it, you probably haven't worn it enough. I always find myself saying things like "what if I need this for an event in the future?" or "what if one day I want this for a certain look and I don't have it?" It's important to remember that trends are constantly changing and what's "in" next season might be way different than the previous. I tend to weed out the pieces that were less expensive and more of a short-term buy. Thankfully, I've been focusing on buying staple pieces that are good quality and will last longer.

3. Poshmark

Poshmark has almost become another social media platform for sellers. If you're not familiar, Poshmark is a website/app where you can buy or sell secondhand fashion. Perks of Poshmark include making some extra cash selling old to put towards new and the prepaid shipping labels. Another great feature is that you can make exclusive pricing offers to users who have liked your listing. I can say from experience that this discount seems to make users more prone to actually purchase. There is so much more behind Poshmark than I originally thought. When I mentioned above that it is really like another social media platform, I mean that there is an algorithm behind engagement and getting exposure just as there is on Instagram. Below are two screenshots of my profile and one of my gal pal's so you can get a feel for how it's set up. You have a profile with a closet and that's where you can manage all of your listings.

I asked my Instagram followers for any insight on Poshmark selling and here is what I collected:

Share your listings several times per day. Share other's listings - sometimes they reciprocate. Be honest about any item imperfections like stains/rips. Include measurements. Share a picture with the item on so the buyer has a better idea of how it will fit. Send offers closer to the end of the week because people generally get paid then. Ship your item out quickly. Write a personal note and ship it with the item.

4. Storage

Small apartment living has made me realize how important conditions for storing clothes and shoes are. Clothing should be stored in places that have lots of air circulation, which can be tricky because closets generally stay closed and then retain moisture. Check out the pictures of the fur coat below. From afar you can't tell the jacket has been affected from storage, but when you look at the bottom pic, you can tell mold/mildew has grown on it. Maintaining a high air quality level helps to create an environment where mold and mildew are less likely to grow. I know you're probably wondering how to make sure you maintain clean storage spaces. On the bright side, there are actual companies like Nash Everett that specialize in indoor air quality. There are some things that are just worth hiring professionals for and in my opinion, this is one of them. For all my PA peeps, Nash Everett has various locations but if you're looking for a mold removal company near Morrisville, PA, give them a call. They offer so many services and products around moisture management and air quality, especially in tight and closed spaces like our closets! It's not worth it to learn the hard way. I know I've worked so hard on building up my wardrobe and maintaining it is just as important.

  1. When spring cleaning your closet, start by decluttering and organizing items. For a thorough refresh, don't forget to include curtain steam cleaning to remove dust and refresh their appearance.
